Caregiver Stress Checklist

When you are caring for other people on a regular basis it's easy to let your own self-care slip down your list of priorities. So, here is a simple checklist to see whether you are a caregiver who is also experiencing early signs of stress or burnout.

There are lots of different types of caregivers. You may be caring for a family member,  working as a therapist in a professional capacity,  or just be someone who is naturally caring and generous with your time and emotions.

Regardless of your official role, if you are looking after other people much of the time, it's important to care for yourself too. If you become unwell, then you will not be able to care for the people who need your support.

 

Make a note of any of the following statements that apply to you:

  • You feel that you have to do everything yourself.

 

  • You think that you should be doing more to help.

 

  • You have been spending less (or no) time with family and friends.

 

  • You longer engage in hobbies or activities that you once enjoyed.

 

  • You worry about the person you care for, and think about them constantly.

 

  • You feel anxious about money as a result of being a carer.

 

  • You worry about making the right health care decisions.

 

  • You minimize the impact of the disease to help you cope better.

 

  • You deny how the disease affects you and your family.

 

  • You feel a sense of loss for the relationship you once had with the person who is ill.

 

  • You feel frustrated or angry when caring for your loved one.

 

  • You are beginning to experience health effects - like fatigue, minor illness, or insomnia.

 

If you recognise several of these situations within your own life, then you may be suffering from caregiver stress. It's important for you to get support for yourself so that you can remain well in the longer term.
