Coaching for Chronic Fatigue and Illness

Chronic illness is quite different in nature to experiencing acute medical conditions. Acute conditions are generally caused by infections, injuries, or abnormal physiological or mental processes which need to be cured, or brought back into balance.

However chronic conditions are much more nuanced.  They have the potential to be influenced by a much wider array of factors.  These include natural pre-disposition, life experiences, exposure to infections, lifestyle habits, and long-term stress.

In addition, when you have a chronic health condition or long-term health disability, it can have negative consequences on your life, work, relationships, and emotional health. This in turn can create a complex cycle where your health can further deteriorate as a result of the impact of these additional stressors on your life, and so on...

The good news is that many chronic conditions can be directly improved through stress reduction, symptom management, and lifestyle factors. This is an area which is currently undergoing much investment and research within the NHS.

However, in my experience, there are several things still lacking in the mainstream healthcare approach.  These include the depth of understanding of the holistic nature of these conditions, the time needed to address them fully, and access to practices which will directly help to reduce the impact of chronic stress.

Having worked as a registered nurse in the NHS for many years, my roles have included running my own clinics for chronic illness management, including asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, and healthy living.  I am also an accredited practitioner in exhaustive conditions including chronic fatigue syndrome, ME, fibromyalgia, and burnout. So, this is an area in which I have had an active interest for many years.

Whilst you can manage symptoms like pain effectively with the use of regular bodywork therapies, I find that lasting improvement is best achieved by combining therapies with coaching.  Also, in my experience, the people who have the most successful results are those who have a strong desire to take control over their own health, and who integrate regular changes into their daily life.
