Physical Therapies for Pain and Symptom Relief

When the stress response is activated in a potentially threatening situation, it triggers a chain of reactions in the body.  These include increased heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate, changes to vision, blood supply to the muscles, and feelings of anxiety.  Ideally, when the situation passes, these physiological changes reset and equilibrium is restored.

However, when we experience high levels of stress over a prolonged period of time, these changes can result in a range of mental, emotional, behavioural, or physical symptoms, or even increase the likelihood of some chronic illnesses.

Some symptoms which may be associated with chronically heightened levels of stress include:

  • Insomnia and sleep disorders
  • Behavioural changes
  • Increased muscular tension
  • Feelings of overwhelm/depression
  • Chronic fatigue & exhaustion
  • Digestive system problems
  • Muscular tension/injury
  • Immune-related conditions
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Inability to relax or enjoy life
  • Chronic worry/overthinking
  • Social anxiety and withdrawal

Physical therapies can be a highly effective way of reducing the impact of stress on your life and health. They can help with reducing the direct physiological effects of stress on the body, whilst also supporting the body's natural healing ability.

Some types of physical therapies can be particularly helpful for the relief of specific symptoms.  For example, muscular pain, tension, or injury will be best helped by deeper, remedial massage techniques. Whilst digestive disorders will be helped most effectively by the use of diet and supplements, together with stress-reduction techniques. All stress-related symptoms will also require addressing the underlying stress response through insight, coaching, and behaviour change in order to get lasting results.

So, as a general rule, the type of therapy is generally less important than the regularity of integrating these practices into your daily life, and making permanent changes which support your own health.  For this reason, I offer coaching guidance on a range of different therapies which you can combine to create a unique plan which supports your health and wellbeing.
